A compost bin does not need full sun to work well, but it does need the right balance of airflow, moisture, and regular attention.
The real heat in your compost pile isn’t coming from the sun. It’s coming from microbes doing their thing. As they break down all that garden and kitchen waste, their activity naturally warms the pile. That’s what keeps the process moving.
What actually matters? Air, moisture, and a little attention. Give your pile a turn now and then to keep oxygen flowing, and don’t let it dry out completely. That’s the sweet spot.
Bottom line: your compost pile can live in the sun or the shade. It’s not picky.
So don’t overthink it. Put your bin wherever it’s easiest for you to use. Because the best compost pile is the one you’ll actually keep adding to.
